Ride on Antarctica

For many adventure travellers, riding on all the continents is a goal to strive for. Some are lucky enough to manage five, others are able to impress by reaching six, but hardly anyone has ever ridden on all seven. Now, thanks to legendary endurance rider Ron Ayres and his premium motorcycle touring company Ayres Adventures, you could ride a BMW bike on the ‘white continent’ for the first time – a feat few will ever manage.

Ayres Adventures is an official travel partner of BMW Motorrad and in January 2013, its Antarctica and Ushuaia Adventure will be taking place. In-between Ushuaia and the Antarctic Ocean is the Drake Passage, consisting of several hundred miles of cold seas, so it is not actually possible to ride TO the Antarctic Peninsula. However, it is possible to ride once you get there – even if there are no roads.

This particular adventure begins with a ride from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia and continues with a cruise to Antarctica. During one of the many shore visits, motorcyclists will have the opportunity to do a short ride on a BMW bike specially brought over on the ship. There will be appropriate banners and signs to properly memorise this significant event.

The tour itself begins on 12 January 2013 in the capital of Argentina. The route between Buenos Aires and Ushuaia is almost entirely paved, making it a great ‘two-up’ experience and this portion of the journey is an incredible motorcycling travel
adventure in itself. The itinerary includes such popular South American attractions at the Peninsula Valdes, Argentina’s Perito Moreno Glacier and Chile’s Torres del Paine National Park. After arriving in Ushuaia, there will be plenty of time to visit the Tierra del Fuego National Park before departing for a 10-day cruise to the Antarctic Peninsula.
