Has there ever been a motorcycle model in history that has been ridden more, or written about more than the iconic GS? Ever since BMW Motorrad presented the original R 80 G/S to the press in Avignon, France, in September 1980, fans have followed the continued development of and enjoyed the thrill of riding this versatile and radical go-anywhere machine that has created one of motorcycling’s most popular classes. And with the latest special model – the R 1200 GS Rallye – this strikingly handsome addition to the range pays homage to over 30 successful years of the all-terrain, flat-twin legend.
The BMW R 1200 GS Rallye was first unveiled at the EICMA motorcycle show in Milan in November 2011 and it was immediately clear from its looks alone that this special model would be very much in demand. With its bodywork in Alpine white and graphics in the recognisable BMW Motorrad Motorsport colours, it harps back to the first series production R 80 G/S bikes of the ‘80s, as well as some of the legendary Dakar works racers that have seen action and success in the dust of the Sahara Desert in the world’s toughest off-road rally.
A closer look at this latest GS incarnation reveals many special parts and accessories that will undoubtedly appeal to collectors (of which there are many) but that are all in fact designed to enhance the ownership of this future ‘classic’ from BMW Motorrad. In contrast to the white, red and blue body panels, the GS fork slider tubes and engine are finished in black, while the Paralever swingarm comes in Asphalt grey metallic, with cylinder head covers finished in a Granite grey metallic effect.
The dual-height seat is designed in an eye-catching black and white colour scheme, while perhaps the most striking feature of this latest GS is the rear frame, which is finished in Magma red paintwork. By contrast, an all-chrome exhaust system and cross-spoke wire wheels stand out proudly against the dark engine and light bodywork.
The special features of the GS Rally are not purely cosmetic either, as this sporty 110 hp travel enduro comes equipped with Enduro-spec electronic suspension adjustment, an onboard computer, heated grips, hand protectors in white, and a case holder for adding luggage, making it ideal for just about any kind of use – on or off-road.
By definition, GS owners tend to be adventurous types, so expect the Rallye to be found in the company of other GS bikes of all capacities, ages and specifications on exciting travels and tours all over the world. While some will undoubtedly end up in museums with zero kilometres on the ‘clock’, that’s not what the development team actually wants. When you have a motorcycle that is purpose-built for taking you where other motorcycles just can’t reach, then it is your duty to experience the thrill of the unknown on this ultimate bike for adventure and global touring.
They say imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, but as any GS owner will tell you, the much copied ‘Gelande Strasse’ is still the original and best adventure sports machine. More than 30 years of being the absolute benchmark in the globetrotting community speak volumes for its strong reputation, so why not experience the best for yourself and join hundreds of thousands of owners all over the world for whom only the ‘real thing’ will do.
