Team South Africa

Colin Gallop:

Since when do you ride motorbikes and how did it come to your passion for off road?
Started riding a 50cc in 1982 as a commuter to school. Did not ride much after school, but had the opportunity to ride an off-road route in Lesotho in 2005. This was my first gravel ride and I enjoyed it thoroughly. I then attended an Introduction to Offroad course at the BMW Academy in Pretoria. I followed this up with Intermediate and Advanced courses in the following years. These days I seldom ride on the roads.

What do you associate with the BMW Motorrad GS?
Passion, Strength & Loyalty

What has been your most extreme or extraordinary Enduro experience?
I was invited to join a group of BMW Dealers on a ride to the Makgadi Pans in Botswana in 2007. The ride to and from the pans was spectacular and somewhat challenging, and the pans were fantastic. In addition, our GS and Eco Challenges held in South Africa are also extraordinary.

What are the goals you set yourself for the GS Trophy 2012?
To compete to the best of my ability for South Africa and my fellow team mates. It would be nice to emulate the performance of our former South African Team.

The GS Trophy is a unique event. What fascinates you the most about ist?
Riding and exchanging goodwill with like-minded GS riders from around the world. In addition, South America as a destination is very special, too.

What further goals you would like to achieve with your GS?
To be able to ride and compete as I currently do with my fellow GS riders at all the South African events that I attend.

What else would you like to tell us?
As we South Africans are passionate about our GS's, we felt it necessary that South Africa was at least represented at the 2012 event. It is for this reason that we are attending this event using mostly our own personal funding. It would be nice to be able to return to South Africa to our fellow riders with a good result.
