Initially, the designers didn’t have any direct influence on the aesthetic – the aerodynamic trim and the extravagant two-tone paintwork in orange made clear statements. However, the R 90 S won bikers over with more than just its looks. It was a true powerhouse with 67 hp and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in under five seconds, and it was the first BMW standard motorcycle to break the 200-km/h mark. Then came a technical innovation that was unique in its time: the handlebar-mounted cockpit fairing and the twin disc brake on the front wheel. It brought victories on the racetrack and plenty of emotional moments – from the Isle of Man to Daytona 200 – and solidified its position as a pioneer of BMW Motorrad’s sporting legacy.
A reinterpretation of a legacy: The Concept Ninety
BMW presented the Concept Ninety in 2013 to mark BMW Motorrad’s 90th anniversary and to pay tribute to the R 90 S. At the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, this custom bike – the product of a collaboration between BMW Motorrad Design and Roland Sands – captivated attendees. With its eye-catching aesthetic, the Concept Ninety celebrated the R 90 S by taking some of the original’s key characteristics and transforming them into modern extravagance. These features include the sporty front trim panel, the typical bright-orange colour scheme with a smoke pattern and the striking red lines.
