From boxer engines to espresso machines
When a passion for technology, iconic design, and excellent coffee come together, something very special is created. In collaboration with BMW Motorrad, ECM has developed an extraordinary espresso machine – in the form of a genuine BMW big boxer engine. In an interview with the Managing Director of ECM, Michael Hauck, he speaks about the concept, the implementation, and the shared spirit behind this unique special edition.
What makes the ECM brand so special?
ECM stands for the highest quality, longevity, and authentic espresso culture. We develop our products with an abundance of passion – and that shows in every detail. Our goal is to combine Italian coffee tradition with German engineering to create indulgent moments that will stay with you for a long time.
How did the collaboration with BMW Motorrad come about?
Our brands complement each other perfectly – both stand for quality, precision, and a strong passion for life. These shared values brought us together, and BMW Motorrad came to us with an idea for a collaboration. We noticed right away: it’s a perfect fit. By the way, we have been relying on BMW for our company vehicles for years now.
Why is the partnership such a good fit?
Both companies have roots in Germany and share the same commitment to high-quality, long-lasting products. For us, it’s not just about functionality, it’s also about getting people excited about technology and design – be it on two wheels or with a perfect espresso.
What makes the special edition so special, both technically and aesthetically?
What makes the special edition so special, both technically and aesthetically?
The heart of the machine is a genuine BMW boxer engine, combined with the legendary E61 group head. Both are iconic in and of themselves – and together, they make a real statement. The design is more reminiscent of a sculpture than an espresso machine: a work of art that produces excellent espresso.
Who was this portafilter machine designed for?
Who was this portafilter machine designed for?
For people who love technology and design – and espresso too, of course. If you love extravagance, lifestyle, and precision, you will be delighted by this machine. It is made for lovers of motorcycles and coffee with a taste for the extraordinary.
What is your personal favourite feature of the special edition?
I think the arrangement of the two pressure gauges in the cylinders turned out especially well – a true design highlight. Also, I really love the way the engine rests on the metal frame and the drip tray that looks like it’s almost floating. We were able to integrate the espresso technology in a way that keeps the iconic engine as the focal point.
What was the biggest challenge in development?
Converting a motorcycle engine into an espresso machine was technically challenging. Working on the solid aluminium block requires a delicate touch. However, our team – from Head Designer Tiziano right down to our external partners – were immediately excited about the idea and worked on it with passion.
What memories do you have from working on this project that will stay with you forever?
When we tried the first espresso from the machine, we knew right away: every step along the way was worth the effort. The whole team’s excitement was incredible, everybody involved put their blood, sweat and tears into this project. The complexity of the project wasn’t an obstacle, but rather a welcome challenge. The memory of this shared experience will stay with me forever.
