R 12 Custom Project
When passion meets individuality, true masterpieces are made. BMW Motorrad Japan got together with the renowned custom magazine Riser and brought the R 12 Custom Project to life – that is Soulfuel in its purest form. The project demonstrates the versatility of the BMW R 12 and shows that it offers the perfect basis for individual modifications. Four of the most well-known customisers in Japan let their creativity run free. The result: Four fascinating interpretations that not only reflect a range of different styles, but also give insights into the souls of their makers.
Each one is unique.

Mooneyes
Speed & Hot Rod Spirit
Mooneyes is well known as an example of Hot Rod and Custom culture, both in Japan and across the world. With the Yokohama Hot Rod Custom Show, they organise one of the world’s biggest Custom events. Mooneyes collaborated with Katsuya Tasaki from Katie’s Customs to work on the R 12 Custom Project. Tasaki is known for his sense of speed and striking designs. His concept showcases the design of the boxer engine perfectly, and combines it with the unmistakeable handiwork of Mooneyes – a tribute to high-speed culture.
Hamans Customs
The Golden Age of Customising
Shinji Matsumoto of Hamans Customs lives for the motoring culture of the 1960s. Inspired by classic coach-builders, he combines the elegance and artistry of this time in his designs. Vintage is his world, and modern motorcycles aren’t usually his thing, but the R 12 was able to tempt him. His modifications ooze the charm of a forgotten era and combines it with modern technology. This R 12 is a real highlight for anyone who loves classic designs and timeless elegance.
Chirihama Sandflats
Speed on sand
The Chirihama Sandflats race is a legendary beach race in Japan that usually only admits pre-1970s motorcycles. The fact that a brand new BMW R 12 is on the scene is causing a sensation. The executives at Hwzn, who are closely linked with the event, brought a true expert into play with Yasunobu Nishita. Although he usually only works with old bikes, he immediately saw the potential for a Sand Drag Racer in the R 12. His custom bike is a declaration of war against the clock – an R 12 that was built for pure performance on loose terrain.
Trijya Custom Motorcycles
Individuality meets approval for road use
Yoshiyuki Okamoto, head of Trijya Custom Motorcycles, is more than just a customiser, he is an innovative self-starter. Trijya has a team of specialists who can do anything; from metalworking right up to CAD-assisted part development. Their approach for the R 12 was particularly pragmatic: They developed a Custom bike that not only looked amazing, but was also suitable for road use. A vision for all those who want a unique bike that they can also ride on an everyday basis.
The R 12 Custom Project highlights how diverse and creative the Custom scene can be, and how many different approaches can be taken with the same motorcycle model.
