BMW in international road racing

Road racing is motorsport on public roads, making it a particular challenge. Although the roads are closed to traffic for the races, they still have walls, crash barriers and trees right by the side of the road. This makes every race a nerve-racking experience.

Just the names of the main international events gets the pulse of every fan racing: the Isle of Man TT, the North West 200 or the Macau Grand Prix. BMW Motorrad Motorsport has been working closely together with numerous successful road racing teams, helping them to achieve incredible successes.

Isle of Man TT

Triumphs and records

BMW riders have set a remarkable record in road racing over the years. The most recent run of successes began in 2014 – 75 years after Georg Meier’s historic victory –  when Michael Dunlop won all three races in the 1,000 ccm class at the Isle of Man TT on the BMW S 1000 RR. By 2019, ten more victories on the Isle of Man had been notched up by Dunlop, Ian Hutchinson and Peter Hickman.

In 2022, the BMW M 1000 RR celebrated a spectacular TT debut, As Peter Hickman won all three 1,000 ccm races and set new records. He continued his successful run in 2023, winning both Superstock races and the Senior TT. He also set a new absolute TT lap speed record of 136.358 mph. In 2024, Hickman achieved a triple triumph for BMW together with Davey Todd and Josh Brookes.

2025 and 2026 saw the BMW racers continue their success story on the Isle of Man. But this is not the only road racing event in which they dominate. Peter Hickman has regularly been crowned the “Fastest Road Racer in the World” at the Ulster Grand Prix and has won the Macau Grand Prix four times. BMW celebrated a triple victory in Macau in November 2025 with Todd, Hickman and Erno Kostamo.

North West

The North West 200 has been held in Northern Ireland since 1929. The triangular course measures around 14.4 km and connects the towns of Portstewart, Coleraine and Portrush. It is characterised by long top-speed straights that simply beg for thrilling overtaking manoeuvres from the slipstream.

Macau Grand Prix

The Macau Grand Prix is a thrilling but dangerous road race that has been held on the Guia Circuit every year since 1967. The track tightly winds its way between crash barriers and concrete demarcations. Top-speed straight sections quickly meet tight corners. Those looking for run-off zones will be disappointed.
